Pasir Mas MP Ibrahim Ali suggested that the parliamentary immunity in the Dewan Rakyat to be revoked so that all elected representatives will be more responsible in their speeches especially when making accusations against others.

The chairman of Malay right-wing group Perkasa made the suggestion today in response to accusations by opposition MP Saifuddin Nasution (Machang) that he owned shares in gambling business.

ibrahim ali sues the sun 290410 02 The allegation was made in the debate on the motion of gratitude to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last March. 

During the sitting, Ibrahim had suggested to the Speaker that Saifuddin be produced to the Rights and Privileges community.

However, this proposal was rejected by the Speaker.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim ( left ) said that he had sent a letter of demand to Saifuddin yesterday.

"He should withdraw the accusations made in Parliament or face a legal action within seven days," he said.

Addressing a press conference today regarding the Bumiputera Economic Congress on the New Economic Model to be held at the Putra World Trade Centre, on May 29, the independent MP said the the withdrawal of immunity would result in MPs to be more responsible from making such allegations.

 "There should not be total immunity...Parliament must amend this law. A person who accuses me, I must be allowed to take legal action on him," he said.
