Bersih 2.0 has set a Wednesday deadline for submission of evidence of police brutality during the July 9 rally in Kuala Lumpur.

The electoral reform coalition and human rights NGO Suaram will compile the evidence for submission to the Human Rights Commission (Suhakam).

NONE Suhakam is to hold a public inquiry into allegations of excessive use of force during the rally after receiving various complaints about police conduct during the rally.

"It is important that people share their experiences so that the injustice and abuse of power are exposed and those responsible are held accountable," said Bersih 2.0 in a statement today.

It called on all participants to provide information if they have experienced physical abuse (such as beating, kicking, slapping or being hit with a baton), verbal abuse, or arrest and detention.

Complainants should submit information on a form available online. They can email it to info@bersih.org with the subject-heading '9 July Police Abuse', or fax it to 03-77844978.

Berish 2.0 has also asked for photographs and videos of these incidents:

  • The circumstances surrounding the death of Baharuddin Ahmad
  • The arrest of PAS’ Muhammad Sabu
  • Unwarranted police attacks at the KL Sentral underpass
  • Violent abuse and arrest by police
  • Shooting of water cannon and teargas into the Tung Shin Hospital compound
"The police have revealed their own carefully selected images to demonise the rally. Bersih 2.0 and Suaram are also compiling our own video and photo evidence," reads the statement.

"We would appreciate all credible information shared with us. Please help us spread the word to all your friends and family who attended the Bersih 2.0 rally."
