A total of 1,928,495 foreign workers and illegal immigrants have been registered under the 6P amnesty programme, the Home Ministry's deputy secretary-general (registration and immigration) Alwi Ibrahim said.

Of the total, 1,031,275 are illegal immigrants, he said in a statement.

Some 161,540 of these illegals are registered in Sabah.

In a related development, Alwi said the Home Ministry had issued a show-cause letter to a company in Johor for allegedly offering amnesty cards and demanded payments of RM3,000 from each of the illegal immigrants registered by the company.

"By using the cards, they promised these illegal immigrants protection from arrest when in fact the government has already given assurance that all illegal immigrants will not be arrested until the authorities conduct a massive enforcement exercise at the end of the registration programme, expected to be in mid-November," he said.

The company has been given three days to reply to the letter, he added.
