Moontime: I strongly deplore the use of force in dealing with protesters and demonstrators. Unless they act violent and start destroying public property, that is.

There was no provocation whatsoever from the students to deserve this kind of treatment from the police. Please learn and grow up, dear policemen. The era of using knuckle sandwiches and blatant abuse of power is now over.

As I recall over the years, demonstrations and protests are rarely violent. except when agent provocateurs mess things up.

In view of what happened to the students, I hereby declare that Malaysia will never ever be a developed country for all eternity and all its citizens are condemned to live under forced obedience aka 'guided democracy.'

No amount of resistance will ever change the stubbornness and recalcitrant attitude of the ruling government. My advice to the students concerned: Leave while you still can. Emigrate and thrive elsewhere.

Al: To all those commentators who are saying Safwan deserved his treatment, you are missing a big point.

No one deserves to be beaten up by the police, even criminals. As a taxpayer, I expect them to conduct themselves professionally, to use non-lethal, humane means of crowd control when necessary.

Time and again, I am led to believe that no improvement to police conduct will come until a change of government happens.

I have not a single ounce of respect for them. Honestly, every time I see a police officer, I curse him (or her) - useless citizens living on taxpayers' money, besides corruption.

Someone, please tell them they are working for the public interest, not Umno.

G Annamalai: In any country, students' movements or demonstrations are the barometer of that country's stability and peace. Their minds are yet to be corrupted. They are idealists and struggle for a true democratic nation.

When these students rise, it is sign that things are wrong. The government should take note of this and try to correct itself, failing which the likelihood of the country falling out of grace is very real.

Their quiet determination was nothing less - to an experienced police commander, that is, who has a well-trained eye for such things - than a form of outright aggression.

In fact, their attitudes were already a direct attack on the police, even before the police arrived on the scene - so obvious it all is to the ‘servile' mind of the habitual enforcers.
