PKR Youth is seeing red over the Utusan Malaysia front page report that says that Anwar Ibrahim’s supporters were responsible for the Monday bombings near the Kuala Lumpur court complex.
In a statement today, PKR Youth chief Shamsul Iskandar Md Akin asked why the daily didn't blame Malay rights pressure group Perkasa instead, as Perkasa had explicitly stated that it would cause “provocation” on that day.
“Isn’t it (therefore) possible that Perkasa may be behind the bombings?” asked Shamsul.
About 50 people held a counter-rally opposite the court complex to show support for Sodomy II accuser Saiful Bukhari Azlan.
It is unknown if Perkasa members were present, but its leader Ibrahim Ali was nowhere to be seen despite his earlier pledge to be there.
Shamsul said the Utusan report was in bad faith and an attempt to smear the image of Anwar’s supporters who had gathered peacefully.
He said the supporters had their bags thoroughly checked by the police before they were allowed to enter the rally venue.
“We believe the incident was an attempt to discredit the police because it was said that the bombs were placed in police cones.
“It was also meant to discredit the rally participants who followed police instructions and cooperated peacefully throughout the rally,” he said.
Shamsul said Utusan must expose the so-called police source quoted in the article or stand accused of making up a false news report.
