Parliamentary select committee (PSC) on electoral reform chairperson Maximus Ongkili revealed that government technology adviser Mimos Berhad will finish examining the 12.4 million names in the electoral roll by next week.

NONE “The sub-committee on the electoral roll chaired by me will discuss the outcome (of the examination with Mimos) in a meeting next week,” Maximus ( right ) said during a press conference today after chairing the PSC meeting.

The company was assigned to sieve through all duplicate names and identity card numbers in the electoral roll as well as those over 100 years old, and check their identities against the database of other government agencies.

It is one of the 10 short-term proposals raised by the PSC to clean the problematic electoral roll.

On PSC’s other proposal to establish a royal commission of inquiry to look into the issue of immigrants in Sabah, Maximus confirmed that it had been discussed in the cabinet meeting last Wednesday.

“Go and ask the prime minister (whether the proposal has been approved),” said Maximus with a smile.

In another related development, the EC has yet to decide whether to remove some 42,000 doubtful names from the electoral roll although their identities cannot be verified.

After displaying the list to the public for two months, only some 50 people approached the EC to verify their identity.

According to Rasah MP Anthony Loke, this was the latest information from the EC chief Abdul Aziz Yusof who was present at the PSC meeting today at the Parliament building.

“The other names are not in the database of National Registration Department, but the EC has yet to decide whether to remove them from the electoral roll or not. It will be discussed in the EC panel meeting,” Loke, who is one of the PSC members, told reporters after the meeting.
