More crevices appear in the opposition as PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today labeled the top two leaders in DAP as politicians who harbour outdated struggles and have outlived their usefulness.

He said DAP chairperson Lim Kit Siang and his deputy Karpal Singh do not fit into the leadership style of the 21st century, which needed a different approach as the scenario had changed.

"We consider them as leaders who have outlived their term, like expired medicine, their approach is that of the 60s and 70s," he was quoted as saying in a Bernama report..

He said this when commenting on press reports that Lim and Karpal Singh were disappointed with the move by Parti Rakyat Keadilan (Keadilan) - which is PAS' partner in the Barisan Alternatif front - to field its own candidates in the Ipoh Timor and Bukit Gelugor constituencies.

Lim will be contesting for the Ipoh Timor parliamentary seat in Perak while Karpal will be vying for the Bukit Gelugor parliamentary seat in Penang.

DAP and Keadilan are set to lock horns in some 20 seats nationwide after negotiations between them hit a brick wall.

Old approach

Continuing his salvo, Hadi said the DAP leaders were adopting the old approach which was no longer suitable to the present political situation and thus their roles were no longer relevant.

The move by Keadilan (to field candidates in Ipoh Timor and Bukit Gelugor) could be due to the fact that they were not convinced that both the DAP leaders could win, he added.

Hadi said personally he has no objection to the decision by Keadilan and the discussions to decide on the list of candidates for all seats for the opposition coalition only concerned PAS and Keadilan.

He added that although DAP was an opposition party, its political beliefs were different from PAS to the extent that it left the BA.

DAP left the opposition coalition after crossing swords with PAS over its aim to establish an Islamic state should it come into power.

Hadi, who is also Terengganu menteri besar, said PAS was more comfortable working with a Malay-based political party because the members were Muslims and it would be easier for PAS to champion its cause.

However, its BA partner Keadilan is multi-racial party.

Contacted later, Lim declined to comment while Karpal could not be reached.
