Despite meeting senior officers from Bukit Aman on Monday, nothing was done to stop violence from disrupting a ceramah organised by PAS-led Felda Settlers' Children Association (Anak) hours later at Felda Sungai Tengi, Hulu Selangor.

NONE Anak chairperson Mazlan Aliman ( right ), told Malaysiakini he had met with Bukit Aman public relations chief Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf earlier during that day to complain over alleged obstacles and threats of violence by supposed “ruffians” he believed to be from Umno and Malay rights group Perkasa.

“This has happened to our ceramah in Negri Sembilan, Terengganu and Pahang, and now this happened in Hulu Selangor.

“We had already complained to the police over the violence but this did not stop these people from continuing to obstruct us, including on Monday night.

“We were hoping that something would be done by the police to help resolve the problem,” he said.

Describing the Monday night incident, Mazlan claimed that hours before the event, a group had put up a road block two kilometers from the ceramah site.

NONE He said they even tried to stop him from reaching the ceramah, but said he managed to arrive through another route.

“When I took the stage at 10.15pm, the ruffians started to come and created a ruckus. They tried to come onstage but about 50 Unit Amal members prevented them. They started to throw water bottles and chairs.

“I decided not to continue on speaking but this did not stop the ruffians. Following the dastardly act, I called off the event as there were women and children also in attendance.”

Police must step up

Mazlan further claimed that although there were police officers present there, the latter did nothing to stop the group.

NONE “Similarly, I called Bukit Aman to ask them to send reinforcements from Hulu Selangor district police station, but nothing was done,” Mazlan alleged.

Mazlan also expressed regret that police did not take any action prior to the ceramah, despite PAS leaders having lodged a police report complaining over the road block that was set up by the men.

He, however, credited PAS Unit Amal for helping to look after the safety of those in attendance.

“Despite being punched and kicked by the thugs, they stood their ground and did not react back,” he said.

Mazlan said he stayed at the ceramah venue until midnight and accompanied some of the PAS division leaders to lodge a police report on the incident.

He hoped the authorities, namely the police, will step up as he expects such attacks to escalate when the general election approaches.

Group were 'clad in black'

Meanwhile, according to Sungai Tengi Felda village security and development committee (JKKK) chairperson Selamat Rakio, a group “clad in black” broke through security on duty that night.

NONE He told Malay daily Sinar Harian that the group proceeded to hurl bottles and several chairs towards the crowd, while yelling for Mazlan to cease speaking.

Selamat reportedly claimed this went on for about half an hour, with several of those on duty being beaten.

This prompted organisers to end the event earlier to prevent any untoward incidents.

The daily reported that three police reports have been lodged on the ruckus, including by Hulu Selangor PAS division chief Muhamad Idris Ahmad and Hulu Selangor Pas youth chief Mohd Nizam Mat Rahim.
