Former DAP national vice-chairperson Tunku Abdul Aziz Ibrahim questioned electoral reform group Bersih and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) over their neutrality, alleging they were pro-opposition.

“Bersih has an interest in the failure of the electoral process. They don’t want elections to be conducted properly,” Tunku Abdul Aziz said during a press conference yesterday.

He speculated that NGOs seeking electoral reform, such as Bersih and Tindak Malaysia, were hell-bent on disrupting elections by training voters to ask questions and pressure election clerks into handing them new ballot papers to protect voter secrecy.

Several NGOs also have suggested that ballot paper serial numbers could be used to link voters to their ballots.

“Why should the clerks offer them random ballot papers just because they asked? These groups are trying to cast aspersions and discredit the integrity of the Election Commission (EC).

“By causing these delays and disruptions, they will make Malaysia look bad to the rest of the world. This strategy to demonise the EC borders on criminal intent,” he said.

However, when asked by The Malay Mail whether if it was illegal for voters to ask for a new ballot paper when voting, Tunku Abdul Aziz declined comment.

“I don’t think it is against the law,” he admitted. “I’m not a technical expert.”
