Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has questioned the police over their “inaction” in not charging those allegedly involved in violence against reporters and had issued threats against himself.

Lim said the attorney-general and the federal government’s practice of double standards are “so blatant” as they are quick - within two months - to charge opposition (Pakatan Rakyat) leaders over their participation in the nationwide ‘Black 505' rallies to protest electoral fraud in the 13th general election, which concluded on May 5.

“But in cases where violence is allegedly used by BN supporters, it is not only delayed but the cases would be closed and stamped ‘no further action’,” Lim said in a statement.

Lim said this has been proven by the written statement by Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, where he said that there had been six police reports issued against Perkasa, the ultra-Malay rights group.

NONE In his reply, Zahid was referring to a Feb 26, 2010 incident at the Speakers Square at the Esplanade, where a suspect had allegedly “abused and threatened” Lim while he was addressing the crowd at a rally organised by Himpunan Hijau.

“The investigation has been completed and has been referred to the deputy public prosecutor on July 19 last year and case (has been labelled as) NFA (no further action),” Zahid had said.

Zahid had also referred to another case on May 10 last year where a group of men believed to be Perkasa members “had demanded that the chief minister act fairly”.

In the incident, the group had conducted a mock funeral in front of Lim’s residence in Jalan Pinhorn, after which they threw posters of him along the road leading to Komtar, where they held another rally.

Also considered ‘no further action’

Zahid said this case, too, had been referred to the DPP and considered “no further action”.

Another police report over an incident in Teluk Bahang on Jun 30 last year, where a commotion broke out during Lim’s visit to the area when a Perkasa member was stopped as he tried to go near Lim by the latter’s entourage.

“The Attorney-General’s Chambers has returned the investigation papers and asked that further probe be conducted to complete the investigation,” said Zahid.

In his response, Zahid had also mentioned other reports including a July 1, 2011 incident where  a photographer was allegedly hit during a rally by the group’s supporters along the Penang Bridge.

According to Ahmad Zahid, the report on the matter has been submitted to the DPP for further action.

Another report, said Zahid, was over an illegal rally by Perkasa on Nov 30 inside Komtar, when the group attempted to submit a memorandum to Lim.

“The probe is on-going as more information is needed before it is submitted to the DPP’s office,” Ahmad Zahid had said.

Zahid had also responded to an incident on Jan 2 this year where Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali had allegedly urged the Muslims to burn Bibles containing the word ‘Allah’.

The investigation papers have also been returned by the AG’s Chambers to continue the probe and complete the report.
