Syariah law should be given the chance to tackle crime if the existing criminal law system is inadequate, says PAS Youth chief Nasrudin Hassan.

"If the nation is in a stalemate and the authorities are out of ideas on how to tackle the abrupt increase of crime, I wish to repeat my stance that I have said before on how crucial it is to execute Syariah law as an alternative to the the current system that has utterly failed.

"Give Islam a chance to prove its ability and capability to handle and curb the rising crime (rate).

                                

NONE "Islam will surely ensure fairness and justice to all races especially those who are oppressed and crime victims, in addition to bringing the blessings and grace of Allah the Creator," he said in a statement today.

Nasrudin ( right ), who is also the Temerloh MP, said the movement will distribute leaflets to help raise awareness of the citizens' role in preventing crime.

He pointed out that since April 1, there had been 15 cases of gun crimes reported in the media, including one that also involved a Japanese sword. Eight of these took place in July.

Meanwhile in a separate statement, Selangor Menteri Besar Khalid Ibrahim urged the police and the Home Ministry to reconsider the state government’s application to field its own auxiliary police force to help curb crime.

He said its previous application was meaningless because the 20 personnel approved were only allowed to police Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) buildings.

"The state government from time to time offers its willingness to provide funding and human resources, and we hope we will received a positive response from the police," he said.

PAS Youth's opportunism

Meanwhile, Kedah Gerakan Youth chief Tan Keng Liang rubbished Nasrudin's claims that Syariah Law would curb gun crimes.

NONE "The existing penalty under the Penal Code is death. Thus, what difference would it make to have criminal laws converted to Islamic law? Is any higher punishmen than death?

"PAS Youth should not simply make recommendation to completely change our country’s criminal laws simply due to their personal obsession of hudud laws," said Tan, who is a practising lawyer.

Tan accused PAS Youth of attempting to take advantage of the rise in gun crimes for political mileage by proposing the change.

He also reminded Nasrudin that he was still waiting for the latter to organise a debate on the implementation of hudud law in Malaysia.

Nasrudin had challenged Tan to a debate on the topic three years ago.
