An 18-year-old National Service trainee from Temerloh has been found dead at the Pelangi camp, in Pahang.

Muhammad Suhaimi Norhamidi is believed to have been beaten with a blunt object

He was unconscious when friends found him on the floor of a bathroom at midnight with bruises at the back of his ears, Berita Harian quoted the police saying.

"He was sent to Hospital Muadzam Shah, where he died," said Rompin deputy superintendent Johari Jahaya.

Suhaimi was said to be healthy and had exercised with other trainees earlier.

His father, Norhamidi Bakar, 46, said he last saw his son when he sent him to the camp a few months ago.

He added that Suhaimi had ambitions to join the police force.

Three trainees, all aged 18, from the same camp have been detained to assist in the investigations and will be remanded up to Sept 30.

A New Straits Times online report quoted Pahang Criminal Investigation Department deputy chief superintendent Mohd Haris Daud as saying that a group of trainees had fought twice with Suhaimi on Sunday, once after lunch and again about midnight.

He said that Suhaimi may have angered some trainees by cutting the queue for breakfast on Sunday.
