MCA today resolved to hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on October 20 that, among others, will vote on a resolution to censure the party's deputy president Liow Tiong Lai.

After a two hour emergency MCA central committee meeting today, MCA president Dr Chua Soi Lek stressed that the proposed resolutions were "very important" and it is not aimed at sniping anyone.

"The resolutions are very important, particularly about whether we are able to hold government positions.

"We will stop anyone from holding press conference and displaying banners in the MCA headquarters on that day and the day before it," said Chua.

In an immediate reaction, Liow said that he is being made the subject of revenge during this EGM and is prepared to face it.

Liow and his supporters attempted to call an EGM early last month that would have put pressure on Chua's camp.

However, their plans were scuttled by legal problems.

Meanwhile the coming EGM will vote on the following four resolutions:

  • To censure Liow for 1) his refusal to accept and respect the collective decision of the presidential council and central committee in which he participated, e.g. disciplinary cases etc; 2) for failing in his duty as general election preparation committee chairperson 3) tarnishing the party's image by provoking infighting.

  • To revoke the party resolution passed at the AGM of 2011 and 2012 in order to enable members to accept ministerial, deputy ministerial or any other cabinet posts;

  • That party members shall accept appointments as senators or any other positions in government, e.g. hospital board members and in government-linked companies;

  • That party members shall accept appointments at the state-level, such as state exco, council members, village heads and any other state government posts as deemed essential for the party.

Meanwhile, Chua told reporters he had to exercise his discretion in choosing a date for the EGM and could not accomodate the September 21 date mooted by Liow's camp, because the  women's wing election at the division level was taking place.

He said that had the EGM been held on that day, a lot of delegates would not be able to attend.

He added that if he had agreed to hold the EGM on that date, he would be dubbed a "pig headed" party president.
