Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Mansor has dismissed Utusan Malaysia's warning today of an impending "Malay tsunami" in the next general election, saying that it is impossible.

"That is Utusan Malaysia's view. I know what is the people's view and we will follow the people's view," he said at a press conference today.

Tengku Adnan at Batu He said this when asked to comment on Awang Selamat's weekly column in the paper today, warning that PAS and PKR would change tactics to win the Malay vote in the 14th general election.

It urged Umno supreme council members not to allow the party's fundamental principles be overshadowed by their personal ambitions.

Utusan's senior editors writing under the collective pseudonym Awang Selamat today congratulated Umno for its general assembly ending yesterday warning that, "After the shocking Chinese tsunami during GE13 that failed to overthrow the government, the latest strategy will be focussing on creating a Malay tsunami at GE14."

Saying PAS and PKR are expected to "change their strategy to compete with Umno" by fighting for the Malay vote, the editorial added, "Be warned. Even though Umno is strong, it is not invincible."

NONE Tengku Adnan countered that the 13th general election - which Umno president Najib Abdul Razak dubbed a ‘Chinese tsunami' - was only possible because Pakatan Rakyat had "confused" the people into thinking that they could form the new government, which he says is impossible.

He points out that Umno had gained more parliamentary seats in the last general election, and claims that the tally will only improve in the next election.

As for its allies MCA and MIC that performed poorly in the last election, he said they will begin to make a comeback after their party elections.

"We will gain more seats from the rakyat because the rakyat will realise that this is the party they can rely on," he said.

'It was Malay forum'

On an unrelated matter, when asked about Umno delegate Musa Sheikh Fadzir’s ( below ) call at the Umno general assembly to replace the 1Malaysia slogan with 1Melayu , Tengku Adnan joined other senior Umno leaders in distancing himself rom it.

NONE “That is a Malay forum, so he can say whatever he likes. In the end, we come back to the government and prime minister who has already promoted 1Malaysia and reminded us that whatever we are today is because of our unity in diversity,” he said, when asked if the call was excessive.

He also lamented that no one makes an issue when MCA and MIC talk about race, but “when a Malay delegate says something you blow it up.”

After listening to Malay voices at the Umno general assembly, Tengku Adnan said BN will turn to Chinese voices at the MCA election on Dec 21.

“We have a concept whereby everything (suggested), in the end, will come to BN and BN leadership will discuss it,” he said, while stressing that decisions will only be made by consensus although Umno is the largest party in the coalition.
