Serdang Hospital ceiling comes a-tumbling down again

A hospital staff's wife and four children narrowly escaped injury when a portion of a ceiling at Serdang Hospital caved in yesterday.

This makes it the fourth report of such incident at the hospital in 2013 alone.

According to Utusan Malaysia, the incident happened at 1pm at a toilet at the Block D staff quarters, barely a week since the last collapse.

“Damages to the quarters do not only involve the ceiling, but also includes damages to water pipes and flooring.

“This caused stress among the staff who are believed to have decided to move to other quarters or rent homes outside the hospital,” the daily reported.

Last week, a similar collapse happened at the trauma and emergency department, but no injuries were reported.

Blocks of ceiling also collapsed at the intensive care unit for newborn babies last month, but there were no injuries as the hospital management had cleared the ward after spotting ceiling damage.

Three staff were, however,  injured last August when the ceiling above the nurse counter at the emergency and trauma unit caved in.

There have been seven similar incidents reported since the RM690 million hospital opened its doors in Dec 2005, but Utusan claimed the ceiling has collapsed in 10 separate locations.

Last month, the Health Ministry said that the hospital's ceiling is being reinforced in stages.
