The two-day Terengganu rebellion is over - former menteri besar Ahmad Said has withdrawn his resignation from Umno after Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak apologised to him.

Ahmad said that he, too, reciprocated by saying sorry.

"He apologised to me for the misunderstanding and I also apologised for my actions," Ahmad told a press conference at his residence in Kemaman this evening.

In particular, he said that he forgave Najib for the misunderstanding related to his daughter's wedding "because he had requested to only resign after the event was over".

"Najib thought the wedding was over on the 10th of this month, but actually there is another reception on the 17th and one more on the 31st in Kuala Lumpur," he said.

Ahmad said his daughter's wedding was a matter of his honour and he resigned from Umno because of Najib's refusal to respect his request.

"Now that we have apologised to each other, I have made the decision to retract my resignation and (Ajil assemblyperson) Ghazali Taib ( right ) will also do the same."

However, Ghazali was not present at the press conference.

'PM may have misheard'

Ahmad, who spoke to Najib earlier today, said the prime minister may have misheard about the details of his daughter's wedding when he was earlier asked to resign.

Ahmad said it was the Terengganu sultan which had fixed his daughter's wedding on the 10th and subsequent functions were fixed accordingly.

"I am a person who has a sensitive spirit, I don't like people to be rough with me," he said, adding that his daughter had been traumatised over the experience.

The wedding, which almost brought down the Terengganu government, will go on as planned on May 17, said Ahmad.

Tents were visible in the compound of Ahmad’s three-storey bungalow in preparation for the thanksgiving wedding reception.

Despite the controversy, Ahmad was all smiles during the brief six-minute press conference and willingly took further questions as reporters swarmed him as he was leaving.

Ahmad's aide also presented to reporters Ahmad's resignation withdrawal letter dated today and addressed to the Umno secretary-general.

"I gladly retract my declaration of quitting Umno and maintain all positions in Umno and as Umno's Kijal state assemblyperson," the letter read.

Resignation triggered crisis

Ahmad had on late Monday night announced he was quitting Umno, hours after being replaced as menteri besar by Seberang Takir  assemblyperson Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman.

Ajil state assemblyperson Ghazali Taib and Bukit Besi state assemblyperson Roslee Daud ( left) had followed suit hours later , triggering a crisis in the state.

The resignations saw BN lose its majority in the state assembly with only 14 BN representatives to Pakatan Rakyat's 15 representatives, on top of the three Umno-turned-independent assemblypersons.

The move prompted a mad rush to salvage the BN government in Terengganu with all the state's BN assemblypersons summoned to Putrajaya for a meeting with the prime minister this afternoon.

Following the meeting, Razif declared the crisis averted and Ahmad's declaration of a truce followed hours later.
