The charges against Seri Delima assemblyperson RSN Rayer, Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman and Umno Youth members show that the government is "even-handed" in its prosecution, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar.

"This is a signal from the government that we will not tolerate any comments or actions that can undermine the fabric of our multiracial society, no matter where it comes from," he said.

Abdullah has been charged under the Sedition Act today, while Rayer's charge under the same act was originally slated for today but has been postponed .

Also to be charged today are Umno members and supporters accused of trespassing when they stormed into the Penang state assembly.

Asked whether Rayer should have immunity from persecution since he made his remarks during a Penang state assembly sitting, Khairy said that is up to the court to decide.

However, he pointed out that there had been a precedent where a MP, Mark Koding, had been convicted for making seditious remarks in parliament.

A slew of police reports had been lodged against Rayer ( right ) when he uttered the words “Umno celaka” in the House.

This prompted the group of Umno Youth members and supporters to barge into the state assembly, demanding for an apology.

Umno Youth members also threatened to torch the DAP headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and attacked the party’s office in Kuantan.

The police are also investigating these incidents.
