Without the Sedition Act, an Umno leader has warned that the country may witness racial animosity and disputes due to the instigation of certain quarters.
Agreeing with Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Cheras Umno chief Syed Ali Alhabshee ( left ) said the country could plunge into a state of chaos.
In view of this, he called on the government to reconsider the proposal to repeal the legislation.
The Umno leader also said that the opposition, which is pushing for the repeal, would become more emboldened.
“They will be free to instigate and provoke like how they are doing to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak now,” he was quoted as saying by Umno Online .
Syed Ali said the opposition would also be free to instigate the people to topple the government with force.
“They will become bolder and more aggressive when there is no law to stop them,” he added.
The Umno leader said the Sedition Act must be preserved and improved according to current developments.
“I am also worried that there would be some quarters who would instigate (Malaysians) to go against the Malay rulers, the Malays and Islam in this country,” he added.
Yesterday, Mahathir warned that chaos would reign in the country if the Sedition Act is replaced with the Harmony and Unity Bills.
The former premier said the absence of the Sedition Act would allow "extremists" to question the monarchy in the country, and even call for the monarchy to be disbanded.
