Mat Sabu defender gets heat from Youth reps
MUKTAMAR A PAS Youth delegate who tried to push party deputy president Mohamad Sabu's call for clerics not to focus solely on Islam was met with several snide responses from fellow delegates at the wing's muktamar today.
Malacca PAS Youth representative Azizan Anuar criticised the party's cleric for constantly raising issues of faith, pointing out that political Islam was much wider than that.

Malacca PAS Youth representative Azizan Anuar criticised the party's cleric for constantly raising issues of faith, pointing out that political Islam was much wider than that.
"Sometimes it concerns me that often in politics, when we make arguments, they (the clerics) would question us on the Islamic principles (syarak) behind it," Azizan ( left ) told delegates at the PAS Youth wing muktamar in Kota Tinggi, Johor.
He said with the party facing a crisis now, some clerics have began making religious arguments, similar to those made by Umno.
He criticised the demands that party members give their unwavering loyalty to clerics, which he likened to Umno.
'Follow the footsteps of Islam'
"Religion is not controlled by PAS. PAS should follow the footsteps of Islam instead," Azizan said.
He also hit out at delegates who staged a walkout when Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, presented his speech yesterday.
The delegates who staged a walkout, most of whom were clerics, were upset with Mat Sabu's call to them to reform.
Azizan also urged party members not to arbitrarily label opponents as "liberals".
He did not mention Mat Sabu by name, but he was the sole delegate who pressed on with the arguments of the party deputy president.
Selangor PAS Youth representative Hanafi Zulkapli, who was the next to debate the wing's chief policy speech, snidely remarked that there were some who complained about constant references to the Al Quran.
"But we never tire when it comes to referring to the Quran and Hadis," Hanafi said.
He added the party cannot adopt anything else other than Islam.
"Be it politics, economics or education, we will not give room to any other form of idealism," Hanafi said.
Another delegate, Muhammad Aiman Shamsul Bahrin ( right ), specifically signalled out Azizan on the matter.
"The Malacca delegate asked why we need to pledged loyalty to the clerics in PAS and why not Umno. That's because PAS clerics are on the right path and Umno is not," Muhammad Aiman said.
He said Muslim youth should instead rely more on the Quran than their faculty to think.
"We, Muslim youths, should use the Muslim way of life in our arguments. Discard the secular and liberal thinking from PAS," Muhammad Aiman said.
The wing’s muktamar was today chaired by deputy permanent chairperson Riduan Mohd Noor, who stood in for permanent chairperson Kamal Ashaari.
Yesterday, Kamal suffered a breakdown and was hospitalised after a 90-minute dispute about the wing’s annual general assembly report for last year.
According to Bernama , Kamal has just been discharged this evening.
