Sepang police chief Mohd Yusoff Awang has defended the decision not to probe an Umno division leader for sedition over his call to abolish vernacular schools.

Speaking to Malaysiakini , he said Petaling Jaya Utara Umno deputy division chief Mohamad Azli Mohamed Saad's statement was not made in "public".

He added that it was a mere "suggestion" to discuss the matter at the coming Umno general assembly.

Therefore, he said, the statement does not contain any seditious elements and the case has been classified as a civil matter.

"This was just a suggestion from him, not a public statement," he added.

Yusoff was responding to criticisms that the police are practising double standards with regard to investigations under the Sedition Act.

He said he had already made a report to his superiors and that the superiors also agreed that it did not contain any offence or is seditious.
 
“Therefore, we won’t open any paper to investigate it,” said Yusoff.
 
On the double standard criticisms, he said that there were two sides to everything, and those not in favour will always criticise.
 
Yesterday, Yusoff had told the media that the police would not take any action towards Mohamad Azli and had classified it as a civil case.
