The role of the Performance and Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu), the brainchild of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, has to be reviewed because it "overlaps" various ministries and affects the efficiency of the civil service, an MP from the BN said today.

Pemandu could perhaps be reverted to the role of a consultancy, or maybe have its role taken back by the Economic Performance Unit (EPU), Kulim-Bandar Baru MP Abdul Aziz Sheikh Fadzir told reporters at a press conference at Parliament House.

"Pemandu is taking over the scope of some ministries, and it is not singing the same tune with some ministries. What it does sometimes cannot be understood," Aziz ( right ) said.

"I think there is a need to review Pemandu's performance, and I do not see Pemandu as being so important," he added.

For instance, Aziz said, the Pemandu report on the standard of living of Malaysians was different from the numbers produced by Bank Negara and other ministries.

"It makes the government machinery not efficient. It must, in a way, be a part of the whole system. But at the moment, it seems to be on a world of its own," he said.

Aziz also suggested that a department be set up to specifically oversee the purchases of the ministries and government agencies.

This, he said, would reduce wastage in the civil sector.
