Demand for Nepalese workers in Malaysia and a  number of Gulf countries rose more than 33 percent in the last three months.

A quarterly report from Nepal’s Department of Foreign Employment showed that 129,410 Nepali job seekers left for overseas from mid-July to mid-October.

“The figure is an increase of 33 percent over the same period last year,” said the report.

A total of 97,180 Nepalese left the country to work abroad in the first quarter of the last fiscal year.

Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are major destinations for Nepalese workers, the report said.

“Despite the festive season, the number of workers going abroad went up due mainly to rising demand in host countries,” it said.

Malaysia received 57,796 Nepalese workers in the last three months, up from 23,127 in the same period last year.

During the same period, a total of 27,934 Nepalese were employed by Qatar, 21,862 by UAE and 13,716 by Saudi Arabia.

Malaysia has lately emerged as a preferred destination for Nepalese workers, according to the report.

More than 500,000 Nepalese are currently working in Malaysia.
