Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s lamentations of Selangor Umno’s ‘corrupt’ image is disparaging to the party, said its secretary Johan Abdul Aziz.

He said it is not appropriate for Mahathir to make such statements without evidence, especially since he is referring to his own party.

“Don’t keep putting forward this corrupt image about Umno. If there is corruption, then arrest all the Umno people.

“To me, it is wrong that Tun talked about corruption. If he has evidence - and he is the former prime minister - then bring it to the authorities.

“I think this does not give a good image to the party because he too is an Umno member,” said the Semenyih assemblyperson, referring to Mahathir by his title ‘Tun’.

Johan was commenting on Mahathir’s blog post on Thursday, where he spelled out three things that Selangor Umno must do to win back support.

Apart from overcoming the party’s corrupt image, the former premier also suggested that more young people be recruited to join the party and leaders who had lost in the previous general elections should step down.

Johan countered that Selangor Umno has been recruiting from amongst the youth, and the Hulu Langat division that he heads had just signed up 700 new voters as members.

He said Mahathir’s concerns could be due to the emergence of Mohd Azmin Ali as Selangor menteri besar, whom some consider as ‘young’.

“But at 50, Azmin is not that young. We should not go into a panic over this new menteri besar. All of the state Umno’s plans have been set,” added Johan.
