A DAP state assemblyperson is vexed that local authorities in Kluang is turning away help from opposition representatives in a time of national crisis.

Mengkibol state assemblyperson Tan Hong Pin claimed that he was shooed away by local authorities while distributing aid to flood victims at a relief centre in Kluang, Johor.

Tan said he was giving out supplies at a relief centre at Kampung Bentong together with Kluang MP Liew Chin Tong ( left ), when both of them were asked to leave.

"We were forced to take back the supplies which was distributed at the relief centre," added the DAP lawmaker.

Tan said he was disappointed by what he noted was "unprofessional conduct" by the local authorities.

"In this serious flood situation, I urge the federal, state and local government to set aside political differences and work together to help the flood victims," he said in a statement today.

In another instance, Tan said his entourage was also turned away from Kampung Bentong Dalam by its village chief on the premise that they were uninvited.

The group had been visiting villages that were facing high risk of floods.

A total of 130,000 people have been displaced nationwide in the country's worst flooding in decades.

Johor, which has largely been spared the brunt of the flooding, has deteriorated slightly as the situation in neighbour states worsens.

The number of evacuees in the state has increased to 1,104 people from 214 last night.
