MIC president G Palanivel has assured that he will not allow MIC to be deregistered by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) over party poll irregularities.

Following numerous allegations, including one by former party treasurer general R Ramanan that Palanivel wants the party to be deregistered, Palanivel, in a short statement today, assured that he is not looking for the party to be shut down.

However, aside from referring to "numerous allegations" and "misinformation" he did not touch specifically on any of the allegations levied against him.

"There are fears that MIC will be deregistered within 90 days from 5 December 2014 if no re-election is conducted. I would like to assure all that we will not in any way allow such deregistration to take place," he said.

"I would like to make it clear that there are certain procedures and proper channels provided for in the Societies Act, 1966 in dealing with complaints and decisions made by the Registrar of Societies.

"We, together with the lawyers, are following proper procedures and have taken all measures necessary to protect the interest of MIC in this matter," he said.

He however refused to divulge more details, claiming that it would "prejudice" MIC's rights to do so.

"Our lawyers are perusing all the issues and will advise on the next course of action in the near future. At this juncture, I am not able to give more details as it may prejudice MIC’s rights," he said.

"In the meantime, we have again written to ROS on 2 January 2015 requesting for extension of time, without prejudice to MIC’s rights," he added.

Earlier today, MIC Youth had criticised his appointment of G Kumar Aaman as the party's fifth secretary-general in just five years.

Ramanan ( left ) had earlier launched a broadside against Palanivel.

A former close aide of Palanivel, Ramanan claimed that Palanivel is attempting to eliminate political enemies in a "cowardly" manner.

There are also fears that the party faces de-registration starting tomorrow and not after 90 days as the first condition of the ROS letter was not fulfilled.
