Police have nabbed six activists, including two lawmakers, who were staging a sit-in near Dataran Merdeka.

The two lawmakers - Simpang Pulai state assemblyperson Tan Kar Hing and Teja state assemblyperson Chang Lih Kang - were assaulted during the arrest.

The arrests occured following scuffles with Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) enforcement officers tried to remove a large banner calling for the sacking of inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar.

During the melee, which occured at about 12.30am, several activists were brought across the street before being put in police vehicles.

Last night, DBKL had warned the activists that they must clear the site by midnight. The sit-in began on March 21.

Instead of leaving, the activists sent out messages urging supporters to come to the site to help protect the banners and camping equipment.

"If they chase us away, maybe tomorrow we will come back with an even bigger banner," Kita Lawan spokesperson Mandeep Singh told Malaysiakini .

Two nights ago, Kita Lawan had strung up large banners at the intersection between Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Tun Perak.

It was removed yesterday morning. Kita Lawan then strung up an even larger banner last night.
