Coming hot on the heels of the chaos that erupted at the Kelana Jaya Customs Department Complex is a video of Customs officers singing and dancing to promote the goods and services tax (GST).

The video, uploaded by Facebook user Zakaria Mohd Noor yesterday, has garnered 30,000 views as of this afternoon.

In the three-minute clip, the officers belt a song on the new tax system, which calls on the people to "develop together with GST".

The recording, which is done in an office, also shows some of the officers carrying placards with the letters "G", "S" and "T".

Sashaying to the tune, the female officers are seen smiling while their male counterparts appear awkward and out of sync.

According to The Rakyat Post , Royal Customs Department director-general Khazali Ahmad said that the the video was done for "fun" by the department's personnel.

He added that it was not an official production by the department and that it was not financed by tax payers.

The government has been churning out advertisements on television and the radio to promote the merits of the GST, which will come into effect on April 1.

On Monday, more than 80 activists were detained in Kelana Jaya following a stand-off outside the Customs complex, which lasted several hours.

The activists had stormed the public information counter on GST, armed with 106 questions .

GST - at six percent - is to replace the sales and services tax and will be levied at each stage of the supply chain, from supplier to retailer.
