Tomorrow, the NGO spearheaded by Ramesh Rao will submit a memorandum to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

Pertubuhan Minda dan Social Prihatin (PMSP) wants Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to respond to his alleged business ties with The Edge Media Group owner Tong Kooi Ong.

This, according to PMSP, concerns housing development with Tong, whom the NGO described as a close friend of Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown.

PMSP also wants MACC to investigate the failure of the 1BestariNet project, which concerns Muhyiddin's portfolio as education minister.

The 1BestariNet project was outsourced to YTL Communications Sdn Bhd through open tender at a cost of RM4.077 billion. It has three phases to be completed in 15 years, starting from 2011.

However, it was reported in the 2013 audit report that after RM663 million of taxpayers' funds were spent to introduce high speed broadband networks in schools through 1BestariNet project, students have found themselves stuck with a sluggish Internet.

The report also states that the 1Bestari Net project, which also includes a virtual learning environment (VLE), that cost the bulk of the spending, is also rarely used by teachers and students.

Not related to Muhyiddin's scathing speech

Contacted by Malaysiakini , Ramesh denied that the memorandum was related to Muhyiddin's scathing speech at the Cheras Umno division delegates' meeting last night.

"There is nothing political about this. This issue (BestariNet) has been raised before. We are not creating stories.

"If we don't do it, the opposition will do it (highlight the issue). So this has nothing to do with the current scenario," he added.

Ramesh said more details would be released tomorrow, after the memorandum is submitted to the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin lamented about the 1MDB imbroglio and revealed how his advice to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak went unheeded.

Describing 1MDB as the "sovereign debt fund", he said the issue was affecting Umno and the ruling coalition could lose the next general election.

Though certain quarters downplayed his remarks, political observers see it as a warning to Najib and indicated that fissures are worsening in Umno.

Ramesh, on the other hand, is the man behind the video confession of former Sarawak journalist Lester Melanyi.

Lester had claimed that documents related to 1MDB were fabricated by the Sarawak Report and implicated opposition lawmakers Rafizi Ramli and Tony Pua in it as well.

Both Sarawak Report and the MPs have denied the allegation.
