Push for 1MDB report to go public, cabinet told
DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang challenged the cabinet to discuss if it supports Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's call for the Auditor-General's interim report on 1MDB to be made public.
DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang challenged the cabinet to discuss if it supports Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's call for the Auditor-General's interim report on 1MDB to be made public.
"I applaud Muhyiddin ( photo ) for wanting it to be made public," he told a press conference today.
"Will the cabinet on Wednesday support Muhyiddin's proposal for the immediate publication of the interim report, or will cabinet members like Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah and Abdul Rahman Dahlan block its publication?
"Are all the ministers prepared to make a public statement on the RM2.6 billion in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal bank accounts after the cabinet meeting? " he asked.
The interim report, was submitted to Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on July 9 but is not open for public scrutiny.
Husni, who is also finance minister II, had cleared 1MDB of wrongdoing based on the report.
However DAP Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua, who has access to the report as a member of PAC had challenged Husni’s stand.
“Any normal person reading the report will be stunned by the sheer number and scale of infractions and transgressions committed by 1MDB and its officers cited in the report," he had said.
Living in dangerous times
Meanwhile, Lim has likened the government's various moves, including the latest suggestion to possibly extradite editor and founder of Sarawak Report Clare Rewcastle-Brown, as a "plot-in-a-plot" against the critics of prime minister.
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said if police investigation on Rewcastle-Brown ( photo ) finds “criminal elements”, it will take action, including calling for her extradition.
Lim asked while the government had taken action against media and opposition lawmakers, would Najib's administration do the same against former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Najib's brother Nazir Razak and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim.
He said Najib's critics had allegedly committed "activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy", sabotage or treason for working with foreign elements.
"Far-fetched? We are living in dangerous times," Lim said.
Malaysian authorities have accused Sarawak Report of publishing "tampered" documents obtained from former PetroSaudi International Ltd (PSI) director Xavier Andre Justo.
Justo was nabbed in Thailand on June 22 and is being investigated by the Thai police for attempting to blackmail PSI with threats to release confidential company documents.
The Home Ministry then suspended the publishing permit of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily for three months, starting July 27.
The suspension was based on its articles on 1MDB which the Home Ministry claimed to be "prejudicial or likely to be prejudicial to public order, security or likely to alarm public opinion or is likely to prejudicial to public and national interest".
