Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is following the steps outlined in former Dr Mahathir Mohamad's guide to political survival, according to PAS.

PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said this is evident following the move to remove Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy prime minister.

"During Mahathir's era, he replaced three deputies - Musa Hitam and Ghafar Baba who resigned in 1986 and 1993 respectively and Anwar Ibrahim who was expelled in 1998.

"During Mahathir's era, there were also numerous financial scandals such as the RM30 billion foreign exchange scandal in 1992, the MAS scandal, Perwaja and so forth.

"However, Mahathir remained as prime minister for 22 years. His formula is proven to be successful," he added in a media statement.

Howver, Tuan Ibrahim cautioned Najib that there is a difference between Mahathir's era and now, which is the internet.

Information, he said, moves in an accelerated manner while in the past, the people had to depend on the TV and newspapers, where information was controlled.

Six questions

In view of the latest developments, the PAS leader posed several questions, which were:

1) Will the new Attorney-General Mohamed Apandi Ali be brave enough to defend the task force on 1MDB and ensure that Najib is called for questioning?

2) Will Muhyiddin survive as Umno deputy president for the next 48 hours? If not, will there be a revolt in Johor Umno?

3) Will there be those who reject the cabinet appointments, especially Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed? Who will be the new PAC chief? Will the new chief bow to pressure to expel DAP lawmaker Tony Pua from the PAC?

4) Will 1MDB president and executive director Arul Kanda and former CEO Shahrol Azral Ibrahim Halim no longer be called to testify before the PAC?

5) How will the Ringgit and Bursa Malaysia react and perform this week?

6) What is the prospect of Ahmad Zahid Hamidi becoming prime minister if Najib is defeated in a vote of no confidence?

Tuan Ibrahim called on the people not be to be hoodwinked by this move to divert attention from 1MDB and described the new cabinet line-up as "pro-1MDB".

"Whatever happens, PAS will continue the struggle against Umno and its cruelty towards the people," he said.
