Mukhriz: Crude speech, but look at the message
Umno supreme council member Mukhriz Mahathir said he was disappointed at the unflattering language used by a Langkawi Umno delegate against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak but stressed it was the message that mattered.
Umno supreme council member Mukhriz Mahathir said he was disappointed at the unflattering language used by a Langkawi Umno delegate against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak but stressed it was the message that mattered.
Mukhriz, who is also Kedah menteri besar, was referring to the speech by Anina Saaduddin at the Langkawi Umno division annual general meeting last Saturday, the video of which has gone viral on the Internet.
In her speech, Anina repeatedly said Najib had kencing (urinated upon) Umno over the RM2.6 billion deposited into his personal bank accounts.
"When we make decisions, it must be based on feedback from the grassroots but sometimes they are expressed vulgarly.
"In that, I am somewhat disappointed, not just a little, but I am indeed disappointed," said Mukhriz at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
No complaints yet
However, the menteri besar said he would still ponder on the message behind the speech.
"I want to understand the essence of the message that was conveyed.
"Even though we can criticise the manner in which she conveyed the message but what is important is what she was trying to convey," he said.
He stressed that Umno needed to be open to what they had to say as it was the voice of the grassroots.
Mukhriz ( photo ) added that no action will be taken against Anina for now as there have not been any complaints from Langkawi Umno.
However, he said Anina's speech should serve as a reminder for Umno members not to go overboard.
"Whatever we want to present, let it be appropriately as sometimes we lose control of our emotions," he said.
On a separate issue, Mukhriz said while there were concerns about the weak ringgit, the positive side of it was that it could attract foreign investors.
Nonetheless, he stressed the government needed to inspire confidence among investors.
