There were no fireworks at the Umno political bureau meeting chaired by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak today, despite attendance by deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and vice-president Shafie Apdal.

This is the party’s first political bureau meeting after Najib sacked Muhyiddin and Shafie as deputy prime minister and cabinet minister respectively in a sudden cabinet reshuffle in July.

"Political bureau members discussed the current political affairs and related developments. It is just a normal platform to meet and discuss things.

"There was no specific agenda and nothing unusual happened," a party insider said of the meeting which lasted about an hour at the Prime Minister’s Department.

There is heavy speculation that the Umno supreme council will vote to boot out Muhyiddin and Shafie from the party at its meeting this Wednesday.

Malaysiakini earlier reported that Muhyiddin, who last week returned from Australia, is preparing his defence in case he is shown the door.

Over the weekend, Pasir Salak Umno division called for the new Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to replace Muhyiddin as the Umno two.

"It is only fitting that the deputy prime minister is also the Umno deputy president," Pasir Salak Umno chief and deputy minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman said.
