Muhyiddin: Leaders try to be heroes by using race card
Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin has expressed concern over events held to whip up racial sentiments.
Muhyiddin said those who host such programmes not only practice narrow-minded politics but are invoking fear in society.
Although he did not explicitly mention it, his remarks in his constituency in Pagoh today come after the Himpunan Rakyat Bersatu rally to defend Malay dignity
"Some politicians prioritise their political objectives above racial needs and practice narrow politics, so they voice out in a bid to become heroes in their community.
"But at the same time, this causes fear and anxiety among other races. This is not good.
"I don't want people in Pagoh to be this way. Pagoh is fine. There are no disputes," he said in a speech at an Umno event in Gersik, Pagoh.
Muhyiddin also warned that events with racial elements should not be taken lightly as it could harm the nation.
"When certain parties organise a programme, it is considered a racist programme. Maybe they have certain objective that they want to achieve but it has created doubt among the people.
"This is what causes unrest. There would be misunderstandings and frayed ties.
"If the situation continues or worsens, it would be bad for us. It shouldn't be this way. Malays, Chinese, Indians and other races are like siblings. Why raise matters like this now?" he asked.
