Ku Li: I'm Umno man, Dr M is not, that's why I back Najib

Umno veteran Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah said he supports embattled party president Najib Abdul Razak because he is a party man, unlike his old rival, former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"I'm an Umno member. Mahathir is not. I've been an Umno member for almost 50 years and a division chief for more than 40 years.

"So what if I signed (a declaration supporting Najib). I'm an Umno member, I must support my president," Razaleigh said in an interview in today's edition of Utusan Malaysia .

Razaleigh, better known as Ku Li, said this when asked on why he allegedly shifted his support for Mahathir by signing the Kelantan Declaration backing Najib.

The declaration, signed two weeks ago, was a counter initiative against the Save Malaysia declaration spearheaded by the former premier.

Mahathir had described this as a betrayal, although not the first by Razaleigh.

The Gua Musang MP said he had never been a Mahathir man, and that the joint press conference he held with the former premier last October was only to condemn abuse of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma).

He also denied that his allegiance for Najib had been bought.
"I'm not after positions. Some people say it's because I 'makan dedak' (ate animal feed, got paid). I'm don't know about that. I'm not a duck."
Razaleigh said the right way to oppose a sitting Umno president is at the party's annual assembly.

"If I don't support my president, we'll wait and see at the general assembly when we want to vote (for the leadership). When the time comes, we'll think (of who to support).

"Say for example we don't support Israel. We're a member of the United Nations. When we go to the UN general assembly, Israel is there too.

"Do we have to tell (the UN) to get rid of Israel first before we attend? That's not possible or logical," he said.
