Umno lawmaker Bung Moktar Radin said today he is an “innocent witness” in an ongoing investigation by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

It is believed that the MACC's probe is related to several unit trust investments made by the Federal Land Consolidation and Rehabilitation Authority (Felcra Berhad), which Bung Moktar chairs.

Sources told Malaysiakini that the probe is being carried out to determine if there were any kickbacks involved in the deal.

When contacted, Bung Moktar revealed that MACC had also summoned Felcra's entire board of directors to assist in the probe.

However, Bung Moktar, who was questioned for seven hours by the anti-graft body today, refused to reveal the nature of the investigation.

"I don't think I have to talk about it, let them investigate, I was there as a witness and I tell them whatever they need to know. That's all," he told Malaysiakini.

He said he was not worried about being summoned again, as it was part of his responsibilities as a citizen.

"If you (MACC) want to call me (to testify again), I can come anytime," he said, adding he had cooperated fully with the authorities.

The outspoken MP added he was unhappy with the media for reporting on the matter “without knowing what is going on”.

Earlier today, journalists had waited outside the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya for hours in order to interview Bung Moktar on the matter.

But the Kinabatangan MP managed to give them the slip by leaving the building through the underground car park.

He had arrived at the MACC headquarters at 9.40am accompanied by another person, possibly an aide or legal representative, and proceeded to enter the building.

Clad in a white shirt, dark coat and blue jeans, Bung Moktar had declined to speak with the media when he arrived.

However, he gave a thumbs-up gesture before entering the building.

Malaysiakini has texted both MACC chief commissioner Dzulkifli Ahmad and head of investigation Azam Baki for comment.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini had reported that the MACC is expected to summon an Umno lawmaker for questioning.

Sources claimed this is over investigations concerning alleged abuse of power in a federal agency helmed by the veteran politician.

Malaysiakini learnt that his wife, a former actress, had her statement recorded late last month in connection with the case.

Investigations are said to have stemmed from the agency’s funds being purportedly used to purchase unit trust investments.

“The MP is being summoned for questioning and was not arrested,” said one source.
