Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said stateless senior citizens will be granted citizenship.

Specifically, Mahathir said those aged 60 and above would be immediately granted citizenship.

This would include 3,407 stateless Indians aged above 60 years old which was brought to his attention by Pakatan Harapan MPs.

"For those aged above 60, they will immediately give them blue identity card, they will be regarded as citizens.

"For those who are younger (than 60), if there is a basis (for them to become citizens), for example, someone who was born (in Malaysia) where one of the parents is a Malaysian, they have a right to become a citizen," he said.

Mahathir said this was to fulfil Pakatan Harapan's manifesto which promised to address the issue of statelessness in the Indian community.

In most cases, stateless people in Malaysia hold red identity cards, which is the documentation for a permanent resident.

However, not all red identity card holders are stateless people as some are legitimate permanent residents.
