At least 1,500 protesters rallied outside Burmese embassy in Kuala Lumpur today calling for democracy in the country and an end to the use of deadly force against demonstrators.
The group, including women and children, chanted pro-democracy slogans outside the barricaded Burma embassy before burning a poster bearing the portrait of Senior General Than Shwe.
Many carried posters saying: "End Violence on Monks," while others demanded "Death to Junta!"
Chaw Su Win, originally from Burma but who has been living as a refugee here for more than 15 years, said she wanted a better future for her eight-year old son Jaw Aying.
"My family cannot return to Burma as we have fled the country. My son was born here and he has never seen his homeland," she said, referring to the old name for Burma.
"Until there is democracy we will never know peace."
Riot police keep watch
Malaysia hosts a large number of migrant workers from Burma, many of whom are here illegally.
Burmese government has come under fire from the international community after the junta's bloody crackdown on protestors last week.
Among the demonstrators were also supporters of detained pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD).
Despite UN envoy Ibrahim Gambari's visit to Burma earlier this week, most protesters said they did not expect much to change.
Malaysian riot police watched over the two-hour long demonstration, which was peaceful.
