COMMENT | Do you want to build your political power? Do you want an inclusive government? Do you want to be a part of the decision-making process of the country? Do you want your voice to be heard?
If the answer to these questions is a resounding “yes”, vote in Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim as the next prime minister of Malaysia. He is good for the country and will work to expand the people’s agenda.
Are you upset with the increasing cost of living? Are the prices of fish and chicken beyond your means? Are you struggling to make rent every month? Are you worried about your children’s education? Voting is your chance to speak up on these issues and more.
But more importantly, you need a leader who would listen to the rakyat’s grievances and aspirations. Anwar is that person.
I know that there are many fence-sitters. After a ceramah, people tell me they are having trouble deciding which is the perfect party/coalition.
Let me say this: there are no perfect political parties or leaders, but we can vote for Harapan and hold them to their manifesto, which is comprehensive in looking at mitigating factors to revive the economy; which zeroes in on women’s rights and weeding out corruption.
I understand the frustrations that young people and first-time voters are experiencing. Many want to spoil their votes. Others want to stay home. But not voting means you are giving up your power, your right, and your voice.
Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) ally, PAS, has publicly declared its intention to work with Umno, a party that’s corrupt to the core. Meanwhile, Umno is also at its weakest due to political infighting.
It’s the monsoon season. As I write this, parts of Klang are flooded as high as two feet (60cm). Many residents are waiting for the water to subside so they can go home.
The Umno court cluster forced this election on us despite warnings of heavy rain by the Meteorological Department. As there is a high possibility of PN working with Umno/BN, every vote for them translates into the court cluster walking free.
Anwar, on the other hand, spent years in prison on trumped-up charges. He was physically abused by the then police chief while incarcerated.
But he stands with us today with a pledge to work for a better country. Anwar promises transparency and accountability, and he swears to nip graft.
Let’s, therefore, give Anwar and Harapan a chance so that we can bring about reforms on the ground, as voting is an opportunity for change.
Let’s make history once again in our country, come Nov 19. Let’s take back our power.
CHARLES SANTIAGO is incumbent Klang MP.
