The Hartford Courant in 244 years has only endorsed a Democrat once. Today, guess what: it did it again. My readers are proof that I, a Republican and Reagan sub-cabinet officer, predicted this somewhat earlier, even before John McCain chose a running mate whom Colin Powell called ‘unqualified’ and the New York Times , not known for hyperbole, called ‘unfit’.
Ed Rollins, Ronald Reagan’s pollster, beat me to the punch. He said it ‘may’ be a landslide. I’m saying it without qualification. No one wants to be in the seat of the Chicago Tribune in 1948, saying John Dewey had won.

It was very disheartening to return to my farm outside Washington DC and only see John McCain/Sarah Palin signs in front of houses. Well, this always had been Republican territory.
When I bought there 25 years ago, my 30ha farm was the smallest in the area and the others were stalwarts of the Grand Old Party.

Harry Truman, 33rd American president, often and proudly displayed the Chicago Tribune headline the day after the 1948 election: ‘Dewey Wins’, referring to the near-universal prediction that the New York governor would win the White House.
Polling has come a long way since then. But it didn’t even need polls in 1948. New York Times articles repeatedly noted the growing crowds for the president and had to rationalise the slim pickings Dewey was getting.

Large acts have large consequences, some of them unintended. When Ferdinand Marcos declared martial law in the Philippines in 1972 and confiscated all private guns, Muslim-Moros went into rebellion.

The American presidential race is not between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. It’s between Obama and Bill Clinton.

The greatest political crisis since the overthrow of the absolute monarchy in 1932 may be looming. The problem is three-fold.

new The higher up you are, the more people you have to protect you, it has always seemed.
