Siva, Nayagam the ones behind release of Tamil refugees
I have noted that certain online media and some Tamil newspapers have glorified someone else for championing the cause of the Tamil refugees who have been under detention for the last 117 days and who were released only last week.
Let me put certain facts here - it was Siva Subramaniam (the former Suhakam commissioner) who took all the initiatives and efforts to have secured the release of these Tamil refugees.
He constantly met with the Home Ministry, immigration officials and UNHCR officers regarding the plight of these refugees. His constant communication with these authorities indeed helped the Tamil asylum seekers get their freedom.
Siva Subramaniam needs special mention for his sincere efforts and to have maintained a low profile on publicity on this matter.
It looks like there are some groups of people or individuals who are all out to exploit these refugees for their own selfish gains and hidden agendas.
I hope the authorities would keep a close watch on this situation. A special thanks to James Nayagam (a current Suhakam commissioner) for taking up this issue as well.
