Insinuating the possible collusion between anti-GMO (genetically modified organisims) NGOs with pesticide companies is neither proper nor scientific. Why not name the anti-GMO NGOs publicly? I, for one would like to know which NGO is colluding with which pesticide company.

As a Malaysian (and one who is not affiliated with any anti-GMO NGOs), I am certainly not comfortable with the way the authorities are handling this impending release of GM mosquitoes.

GM mosquitoes are man-made and they have no way of occurring naturally. Nobody knows for sure what happens once these man-made mosquitoes are released into the wild.

I think there’s a lack of public consultation on the part of the authorities and I strongly feel the populations of Bentong and Alor Gajah (the two sites where the GM mosquitoes are to be released) should be properly informed.

For those who insist that it’s safe to release the GM mosquitoes, perhaps, they should think of releasing them in their own backyard or better still, within the confines of their own homes.

As a Malaysian, I’d expect our government to take care of my welfare and that of my fellow citizens first over that of any foreign firms or interests.

The current Malaysian regulatory process is not adequate to take care of the issues of redress and liability if anything should go awry with the release of these GM mosquitoes.

So , I say ‘No to the release of GM mosquitoes’ until independent scientific evaluations show beyond reasonable doubt that the release is safe and that the issue of redress and liability (in the context of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety) has been written into our Malaysian law.

And , that is my agenda as a Malaysian.
