Sleepless over the T word
I was sleeping peacefully as the 'peacekeeper titans' gathered in Kuala Lumpur to define the word ' terrorism'. I, for one, do not understand the need to discuss the 'T' word. The sad part of the Organisation of Islamic Conference meet is the wastage of millions of Malaysian taxpayers money.
All one needs to do is look up the word in the dictionary. The Oxford dictionary describes the word as, "practice of using violent and intimidating methods, especially to secure political ends". For the word terrorise : fill with terror; coerce by terrorism. The noun word is terrorist . Lo and behold, the meaning of the 'T' word found without spending millions.
The problem with the OIC is since when have they agreed on anything unanimously? They could not even agree on the actions to take when Iraq invaded Kuwait. The suicide bombings by Palestinians cannot be described as 'terror', yet the retaliatory actions of the Israelis is 'terrorism'.
At the end of it all, Malaysia had declared the special session "successful" with delegates reaching "a consensus" on terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. This was the exact declaration of the Pakistani President General Pervez Musharaff. Tut, tut, a lot of money could have been saved if only somebody had the sense to call Musharaff.
So the Muslim world has decided that the Palestinian suicide bombing is not terror but the Israelis retaliatory strike is. The Western definition of terror is opposite the Islamic world's. We have created a crisis! It is time to call out the UN Security Council!
Another joke, the 'weapon' to deploy is an oil embargo. They could not agree on that too. US imports 24 percent of its oil from the Middle East. First problem, the oil flow by ships to the port of destination is decided by the buyer. Secondly, other non-Muslim countries can always increase their output to offset this artificially created shortage.
The West will be forced to speed up the research in alternative fuel. Imagine if artificial fuel can be created with ease. Until today, Saudi Arabia has yet to recover from the effects of the 1973 oil embargo. The biggest irony is that Iraq's oil also finds its way to USA.
The only resource the Middle East has of any real significance is oil. Imagine their economic plight if they cannot sell their oil. The titans of peace do not think rationally. Most of the oil-producing countries happen to embrace the Muslim faith, I trust they know what they are doing unto themselves.
