Last week's report that the deportation exercise against the 600,000 illegals estimated to be in the country has been suspended indefinitely, shows how inept the authorities are at formulating any kind of policy or procedure to control this potentially dangerous situation.

It is a basic admission of incompetence by the Home Ministry. A few years ago, we had a similar exercise and today, the situation is still not resolved. Rather than pass new laws and cut more trees to make the paper, the Home Ministry needs some strategic thinkers to think through the whole process.

Just compare this with the ongoing blitz to nab traffic offenders and one cannot help but feel that a lot of things are seriously wrong.
