Dr Ang Swee Chai is perhaps a model of courage and an example of what a professional with a conscience should really be. (See A promise still kept to the children of Sabra and Shatila .) She could well have chosen to look the other way or to take the alternative path of so many so-called practitioners who in spite of their Hippocratic oath do no more than sell medical chits and or act as salespersons for pharmaceuticals companies for handsome returns.
It is becoming both mind-numbing and pathetic how many of us choose to ignore the plight of the Palestinians or to chant slogans and reduce the worst human tragedy of the last 50 years to a soap opera or a blood sport.
Many Muslims see it as a cause for Islam. Others like the rich and powerful oil states have drained every ounce of opportunity from the Palestinian tragedy. They pay lip service to the cause, while using it as an economic tool to benefit from oil price hikes and finance their vulgar lifestyle.
Dr Ang stands out as a beacon of what Asian men and women can be or do to contribute towards fighting injustices wherever these occur. Many fail to realise that the Palestinians are not simply Muslims, as the West would like us to believe.
Hannan Ashrawi is a Maronite Catholic, The late Abu Nidal was an Orthodox Christian and George Habash another Maronite Catholic. There are many more. More importantly they are human beings suffering a terrible injustice which Dr Ang has dared talk about to the world. The Jewish lobby can be very unforgiving of anyone who dares question their self-righteous behaviour even in Sabra and Chatilla.
Fortunately the MacCarthyistic line of 'anti-semite' 'Holocaust' and other often embarrassing lines thrown at critics of their bloodlust in the Middle East to deter criticism is no longer valid currency.
We have a lot to thank Dr Ang for, in setting such a fine example.
