If you ask any Penangite the one local issue they can recall in 2002, it will most probably be the Penang Outer Road Ring (PORR) project.

I have yet to hear even one squeak of support to build the most expensive highway in the country, other than that from fawning politicians and of course those with vested interest.

In June, (Works Minister) S. Samy Velu said the government would decide on the project after the public gave their feedback. So, what did he hear from the public? We want to know. I doubt if there's anyone who supports the project which smacks of favouritism, cronyism, and corruption. Imagine a project of such expense being handed on a silver plate to a group of people led by an ex-politician.

The project is being bulldozed through despite the people's objection and grievances over many questionable issues: the viability of the project, the track record of the developer, the massive prime land award and the 30-year-long toll collection allowed.

I wonder why so many politicians are supporting the project when the money could be better used to build more parks, more affordable housing and a comprehensive public transportation system.

Let's hear from people who like the idea of paying toll for 30 years, paying premium for properties build on prime public land. Let's hear from people who think the PORR is the best thing that could happen to Penang.
