I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read what Attorney-General Abdul Gani Patail and DPP Tun Majid Tun Hamzah had to say during the hearing of Anwar Ibrahim's bail application:

"Nobody knows what the future holds for us. This is fact. Only God knows what is going to happen," said Abdul Gani.

"As no one can predict what happens in the future, the probability of the applicant (Anwar) committing any offence or breach of the laws, if he is freed on bail, cannot be guaranteed at this point of time," said Tun Majid.

Of course, that can be said about any human being living on the face of our earth, including Abdul Gani and Tun Majid.

Is there any guarantee that they - or you - or I will not commit a crime in the future? Only God knows.

To accept what Tun Majid and Abdul Gani had to say - that no one but God can predict the future - is to deny bail to every person on the face of the earth.

If so, there is no reason why the government of Malaysia - and the governments of most countries in the world - have allowed for bail in their laws.

But Malaysian law does permit bail.

I am sure that everyone can see through this flimsy excuse to deny bail.
