The whole nation is watching the Canny Ong trial closely. The grief has not exactly gone away. No doubt many truths will emerge including whether sufficient duty of care extended by our vanguards (the police) that could have prevented the unwarranted loss of Canny.

More will hopefully be unfolded in the coming days of trails and ultimately the populace's hopes are that the government and the police would hear the clarion call and seek to rectify their shortcomings in crime prevention/protection of the rakyat (citizens). I am not alluding to any lack of duty on their part as we did not intend to seek a trial within a trial.

Amidst all these gloom, it is heartening to hear that there were a number of civic-minded Malaysians left like Cik Aminah and her family who sensed that Canny was in danger and took the trouble to lodge police reports.

How often have many of us turn away from our civic duty and not help our fellow human beings in their crucial time of need - these may be accidents, snatch thefts, road bullying, etc. More than often, we have numbed our senses and turned a blind eye rather than acting as good samaritans.

I know this letter should better appear in a mainstream press but I appeal to malaysiakini to print to help restore our faith in our fellow malaysiakini readers who in recent weeks have seen the deluge of disillusioned racial-centric articles (whether justified or otherwise).

If only more of us could be like Cik Aminah and her famly members on that fateful night (see a person and try and help), we will have a brighter future for Malaysia.
