I wish to propose to the government that a new law be enacted with regard to public complaints which are piling up by the day

Every time a complaint is made about a government department, either by a company or an individual be it through a direct written format or through the media, then this enacted law must compel the parties concerned to act within a specified period failing which an offence is deemed to have been committed.

The enactment of a law of this nature, probably the first of its kind ever, would precipitate a sense of urgency on the complaints made against the parties concerned. As of present, nobody is obliged to respond to complaints.

Sometimes a complaint may involve personal suffering and may even involve a matter of life and death. It could be the collapsing hill slope, an uncovered manhole or an exposed electricity cable on the road or any other matter.

Sometimes, time may not be on the complainant's side and unless the complaint is acted upon with speed, life may be threatened. All complaints, irrespective of their nature, require immediate action.

I know some may suggest that a court action be field by the aggrieved party. This is not what I am referring to. I am referring to a practical solution that will compel government agencies to respond to urgent, everyday matters.

I hope our government would look into this suggestion in the interests of the Malaysian public. This may also enhance our government's efforts to create a more responsible and conscientious society.

There are numerous complaints published in our local printed and electronic media that appear compelling enough for immediate attention.
