I find our Information Ministry both redundant and distressing. Now, all of a sudden, we have too many TV stations is it?

If you folks remember many years ago, a former information minister decided 'for our own good' that there should not be a 24-hour broadcasting because Malaysians wouldn't get enough sleep and wouldn't be able to work the next day.

The problem with some politicians is that they enjoy imposing their values and judgements on us like a moral guardian. They believe we are not adults and treat us like kids.

The ironic thing is that after that former information (or is mis-information?) minister left, Astro came in with a 24-hour transmissions. Do we find half the working population sleeping on their jobs? We were left in peace after the departure of that unwise minister.

But like a life cycle repeating itself, the same nightmare has emerged with another duplicate. We now have another mis-information minister whom I think should perform better in the tourism ministry.

This minister is harping along in same irrational manner and the idiot box is blamed for rising violence and criminal activities, maybe not in that sequence. We must have local content - foreign content and advertisements are suddenly unacceptable.

There are still ministers who will not hesitate to make TV programmes the scapegoat of our unhealthy social environment.

I think we matured adult Malaysians certainly don't need politicians who can't think out of the box and are too feeble to think intelligently to analyse whether one can be easily influenced by the content on television.

When sex crimes came to the fore, I remember that some politicians blamed it on a glut of illegal VCD blue films. Or they blamed prostitutes and suggested solutions such as that 'wives should check their husbands' trousers for stains'.

With due respect to our prime minister, I think in the future, anybody wanting to be a minister should certainly sit for both an IQ test and a lie-detector test before qualifying for the post.
