I refer to the letter Why special treatment for Anwar by LSY. The writer feels that Anwar is just like everyone else. This is not at all true. He is a former deputy premier, a post only held by three Malaysians, who were not later throned prime minister - Musa Hitam, Ghafar Baba and the latest being himself.

Anwar was not released due to good behaviour or clemency. He was freed by the highest court in the land agreed which found that the earlier lower court had erred in its judgment and the former deputy prime minister had no case to answer.

LSY points out that Anwar was chauffeured away in a Mercedes Benz and received his passport within the hour. Not every ex-prisoner get this kind of attention. But then again not is every ex-prisoner the second highest ranking executive in country at one time.

LSY is in turmoil at the fact that Anwar was released from jail to a life of elevated elite status. Why not?

Anwar is not bankrupt and his siblings Rosli and Idrus are successful businessmen - the Mercedes is the 'family car'. The house he has in Damansara Heights was the house he and his family were living in even before Anwar became deputy prime minister.

LSY went to the extent of claiming that what Anwar has gone through equates to peanuts. The writer should go to developed countries and see how even guilty leaders are treated - Bill Clinton did not serve a day in prison.

Richard Nixon also retired handsomely. Evil leaders in Croatia and Bosnia were given due process of the law and not subjected to brutality. For that matter, even Saddam Hussein has the right to reject comments. Korean leaders, when given clemency, had their honour restored and resided lavishly from then on.

These men, amongst many, were pronounced and known to be guilty. Anwar is not.
